Elk River, where two beautiful rivers converge, is about 35 miles northwest of Minneapolis and where Highways US 10 and 169 intersect.

 

The area is also served by Highway 101 for easy access to Interstate 94. St Cloud, another metropolitan area is only about 35 mile northwest of Elk River. Elk River covers an area of 43 square miles and has a population of 23,447.  

As far as recreation goes, Elk River has it covered: 44 parks, 75 miles of paved hiking and biking trails, 40+ acres of maintained prairie, six rain gardens, four tennis courts, three sand volley ball courts, a youth athletic complex, an ice arena and so much more. Downtown Elk River in the summer is rocking with a Concert Series in the Park, and a weekly farmers market.

The newest development in transportation is the addition of the state-of-the-art Northstar Commuter Rail and Elk River station stop.  The Northstar Commuter Rail gives area residents convenient and easy transportation to downtown Minneapolis. The Northstar offers a relaxing atmosphere and free Wi-Fi to make your trip to/from work stress free. The Elk River Area School District (ISD 728) is the eighth largest school district in Minnesota. ISD 728 is a progressive district which serves approximately 12,500 neighborhood students and more than 50,000 total lifelong learners in the surrounding communities. Elk River Area School District offers a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program at the elementary and middle school level. Elk River Area School District offers 17 public schools, three private schools and one charter school options.

There are several universities and colleges in or within a short distance of Elk River: Anoka-Hennepin Technical College, Anoka-Ramsey Community College, University of Minnesota Twin Cities, and St. Cloud State University.

Elk River boasts a strong and positive workforce and labor pool. The median age in Elk River is 35.7 years old. Almost 95.3% of residents have a high school diploma and almost 30.4% have a Bachelor degree or higher. Sherburne County prides itself with a world class workforce and offers various electrical engineering and technical training opportunities.  

The city of Elk River is served by Elk River Municipal Utilities (ERMU) and is proud to be a second time recipient of the American Public Power Association's prestigious Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3) designation.  ERMU is one of only 184 public power utilities, out of 2,000 nationwide, to receive this recognition for providing consumers with the highest degree of reliable and safe electric service.  Consistently ERMU has achieved a top-notch reliability score. In 2015, ERMU maintained a 99.99% Average Service Availability Index (ASAI).
